EventScotland, as the national events agency, works to generate, bid for, attract and sustain events which will drive tourism and create international profile for Scotland. EventScotland is dedicated to leading Scotland's events industry and strengthening the nation's position as a world class events destination.
Working in partnership with Edinburgh City Council, EventScotland has played a major role in bringing the World Touch Cup to Europe for the first time. Edinburgh will act as a springboard for the further development of Touch in Scotland, and the northern hemisphere as a whole, attracting some of the world's best players.
Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer at EventScotland, the national events agency, said:
“Touch is a rapidly growing sport in Scotland and it is estimated that more than 5,000 people now regularly play in organised competitions around the country. Its popularity here, combined with an unrivalled reputation for hosting major rugby tournaments, will make Scotland a fantastic host for Touch World Cup 2011 and we're excited to be the first European host for this prestigious event.”
The Scottish Touch Association is hugely excited to be hosting the Touch World Cup and welcoming the world's best players to Edinburgh in 2011.
The STA is especially pleased to be the first European nation to be awarded the honour of hosting the sport's flagship event. Scotland's success in bidding for the World Cup reflects the rapid growth and development of our sport across Scotland, the UK and Europe.
From relatively small beginnings, Touch has become one of the fastest growing sports in Europe, and both the playing numbers and the quality of performances continue to rise throughout the UK and Ireland and the continent.
Scotland's national squad is going into the event in fine fettle, with our Men's Open side the reigning European champions. But as well as competing with the best players in the sport and showcasing the game to a wider British audience, we are looking forward to the legacy the World Cup will leave in Scotland. We are excited about the future opportunities to help even more people enjoy our fun, social and dynamic sport.
